Can you spell HOMOPHOBIA?

I've wondered for long now whether God has the capacity to hate. But thanks to www.godhatesfags.com I now see the light. I found this page especially enlightening, while this one really clarified things for me.

  • I really don't know how to reconcile this approach to religion with my understanding of Jesus. I find everything I read from this church to be filled with such hate and viciousness that to me doesn't seem to be of God. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd be very surprised.

What surprises me is the choice of sin-the apostle Paul seems to reserve more contempt for gossip mongers than he does for any type of sexual sinner. So maybe it's entertainment news and tabloid magazines that are causing the hurricanes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks etc.. I suppose it just feels a bit arbitrary to me.

What interests me here is that as far as I can see their whole theology is internally consistent- clearly rubbish in my eyes, but still internally consistent- this has been given a lot of thought, backed up by scripture (although Satan quotes scripture at Jesus during the temptation).

So what do we say to Westboro Baptist Church? How do you even begin a conversation with someone whose views are so contrary to your sensibilities?

  • Pete, one of the ways I'd suggest beginning the conversation is to listen to the x3blog podcast next week when they interview the guys from Westboro.

Not sure how to access their podcast without iTunes. But mail me if you'd like it.

  • I read on wikipedia that there are about 200 members of this church- it's something Stephen Jay Gould called the 'Great Asymmetry'- it can take much less effort to be destructive than to be creative- 1000 year's work growing a forest can be undone overnight by a hurricane- and I suppose these guys are the same kind of thing. For a non-Christian being exposed to these guys, they will definitely 'shade his thinking' in a way that could possibly overwhelm the good work being done by literally millions of other Christians.

And as appealing as it would be to delete this post- how does that help us? I think that seeing people with this kind of opinion can force us to think through our own views and hopefully let us see our own standpoint more clearly

  • Sorry dube, the post is staying. Out of the 6 people who have commented on the topic so far, all are male and 5 of the 6 are definitely hetero (as far as I know). Why is that we've gotten so angry? Surely it is not our place. What is it about this church's approach has been so violating?

  • I hear you Dube, and that's a cool attitude to have, but to me there is still a bit of value in trying to refute what they say. Otherwise, you can end up just rejecting everything you don't agree with because it offends you.

So, what if Westboro are right? What if God hates America,Sweden, gays, catholic priests,Christmas, minibus taxis etc?

As confident as I feel that I have a more accurate view of God then they do,I'm pretty sure they are confident in their own correctness. So, for myself, I want to be able to logically refute their position.

And out of interest, what evils do you think are the ones we really need to watch out for?

  • Dube, is not ignoring evil tantamount to denying its existence. Someone once wrote that the biggest mistake we can make is to have an unhealthy interest in evil or to deny existence.

Anyway, I won;t delete this post nor the others I have posted because they share information. We need to know that these wacko's are out there.

I agree with Luther when he says "The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts of Scripture, is to jeer and flout him, for he cannot bear scorn".
