I believe Jesus told parables as opposed to "telling it like it is":

Many great religions started of with a person of high moral worth who tells stories that convery those values in a memorable and moving way and which are also capable of being understood at many levels. A few hundred years later the theoloans arrive and life then becomes more complicated.
